THE MIRACLE OF SAINT CHARBEL MAKHLOUF
A long time ago (in May 1828, to be exact), a little baby named Youssef was born in Lebanon. As he grew up, he became more and more quiet. So quiet, in fact, that he became a monk! Although, you don’t have to be quiet to be a monk, but they tend to be. What’s a monk, you ask? A monk is basically someone who is part of a group of men who takes vows, usually vows of poverty, obedience and chastity (keeping our hearts and bodies pure). What is a vow? It is a very, very strong and sacred promise. When he received his habit, the clothes the monks wear, Youssef was no longer Youssef; he was now known as Charbel. And he wasn't just any old monk—he was well known for his deep love of God and for living a simple, quiet life as a hermit. Now, Saint Charbel loved two things more than anything else: the Eucharist, which is the body and blood of Christ we receive at Church, and the Virgin Mary, who is the mother of Jesus. He spent his days praying and helping others quietly.
Years later, after Saint Charbel’s death in 1898 (that’s 1898 - 1828 = the young age of 70! And we can refer to him as Saint Charbel for the rest of the story because that’s what he became after his death years later!) something incredible happened, a miracle.
A woman in Lebanon named Marie became sick, so sick that she lost her ability to walk and became completely bed-bound. She continued to get sicker and sicker and felt pain in every part of her body and her teeth began to fall out. To get to Mass, her sisters would carry her. She became so sick that a priest administered Last Rites because they thought her time was coming to an end.
Marie prayed and asked for the help of Saint Charbel. And you know what?! He appeared to her in a dream! So her sisters took her to visit his tomb. She prayed deeply and saw drops of water on his tomb. She took her handkerchief and wiped the drops. Then she touched them to the sores on her body. As she prayed, something amazing happened—she could walk again! Her health was completely restored! Everyone was so amazed! They believed and knew that Saint Charbel healed her.
People shared more and more stories about miracles happening through Saint Charbel. His fame spread far and wide, and many years later, in 1977, the pope decided that Saint Charbel should be remembered forever as a saint. His feast day is celebrated every year on July 24th to honor all the good things he did.
So, whenever you hear about Saint Charbel, remember how he lived a simple life of a monk but Christ still chose to work many miracles through him. Maybe his story will inspire you too!
