THE STORY OF SAINT ALPHONSUS MARIA DE LIGUORI
A long time ago, in a small village in Italy called Marianella, there lived a young boy named Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. Alphonsus was known for his sharp mind and kind heart, but he was also very stubborn. He always wanted things to go his way, no matter what. I’m sure this is something you may understand sometimes! Stubbornness can be turned into something good, that is persistence, how to keep working without giving up, which is what we’ll see in Alphonsus’ story.
One day, Alphonsus had a big argument with his father. His father wanted him to remain a successful lawyer, but Alphonsus had other plans. He wanted to leave his work as a lawyer, become a priest, and dedicate his life to serving God!
"No, Father, I do not want to be a lawyer," Alphonsus said. "I want to follow my heart and become a priest. This is what God is telling me to do!"
His father was very upset with him after hearing this. "You are being very silly, Alphonsus! You must listen to ME and become a lawyer like I have planned for you. Forget about your plans."
