How does the pope choose his name?

Daisy & Sheep episode 10 🎉

Join Daisy & Sheep as they explore the Pope Name!

Read with your children

Sometimes people change their names when they get a special job! Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, meaning “rock,” because Peter was the rock Jesus built his Church on. When someone becomes pope, they pick a new name too, showing they’re ready for a big mission to help the Church. It's like getting a new superhero name for a new adventure!

Fun Facts!

I thought I would include some pope name fun facts:

  1. Most Popular Pope Name: The most commonly chosen papal name is John, used by 21 popes.

  2. First Name Traditions: No pope has chosen the name Peter since the first Pope, Saint Peter. Out of respect for the Apostle Peter, the title "Pope Peter II" has been avoided.

  3. Double Names: Only two popes have used a double name: John Paul, chosen by John Paul I in 1978 to honor his predecessors, John XXIII and Paul VI. His successor, John Paul II, continued the tradition.

  4. Unique Names: Several popes have selected names that have only been used once, such as Lando (913-914), Hyginus (136-142), and Linus (67-76).

  5. Birth Name: Pope Marcellus II (1555) was the last pope to keep his birth name when elected. After him, popes began adopting new names upon their election.

We are praying for you. Have a blessed day!

In Christ,

Trevor
