Edition 2 Catholic Stories: The Story of Saint Clare of Assisi

Hello dear reader!

This weekly saint story is a story about a beautiful woman who did great things for God. May your family enjoy learning about Saint Clare of Assisi!

THE STORY OF SAINT CLARE OF ASSISI

A long time ago in a small, wonderful town called Assisi in Italy, a little girl named Clare entered the world in 1194. That’s quite a long time ago, isn’t it? She grew into a happy, bright-eyed girl who loved playing in the meadows, helping her family, and talking to God in her prayers. Although she came from a family that had much, what she treasured most wasn’t riches and money, but the love and kindness in her heart. This treasure in her heart is what sets the story of the rest of her life…

Clare heard about a man named Francis who also lived in Assisi. Francis gave up all of his riches and money to live simply and help the poor. Clare began to attend Francis’s sermons, captivated by his words about living for God and helping others. Clare was inspired by his example and wanted to live a life of simplicity and love for God, just like Francis.

One night, under the light of the moon, Clare secretly left her home and went to Francis.

“Brother Francis,” she said determined, “I wish to live as you do, in simplicity and love for God.”

Francis smiled warmly. “Then you must be ready to give up everything,” he said. Clare nodded, and with a solemn heart, she cut her beautiful, long hair put on a rough robe, and began to live with nuns in a convent, showing her commitment to living a humble life dedicated to God.

Clare’s wealthy family was not happy. They tried to bring her back home, but she was determined to follow her heart and her love for Jesus, just like Francis had done. Over time, her family accepted that she would be following this way of life. She started a community of women who wanted to live like her. They called themselves the Poor Clares. They prayed, helped the poor, and lived simply.

One of the most incredible moments in the life of Clare is when an army came to attack her convent. Clare prayed to Jesus, asking Him for protection. She bravely carried the Holy Eucharist (the bread that is Jesus’ Body) to the walls of the convent and presented Jesus. Miraculously, the attackers turned away in fear. No one was harmed! Jesus saved the day!

When Clare grew older, she fell very sick. She couldn’t get out of bed, but she continued to pray and lead her sisters with a happy heart. She trusted in God’s love and believed that He would take care of all of them.

Clare passed away peacefully in 1253. Usually it takes many years for someone to be declared a saint. But with Clare, only two years after she passed, she was declared a saint because of her pure heart and deep love for God.

Let’s remember Saint Clare of Assisi, who teaches us that living simply, praying with faith, and loving others are the keys to a joyful and holy life. And just like Clare, we can be brave and trust in God’s love, no matter what come our way!
