3 tips to pratice intercessory prayer with your children
How can you help your children grow in their faith?
This method has been done centuries.
And, best of all, it is simple.
Intercessory prayer!
Throughout Holy Scripture, we see holy men and women pray for God’s intercession.
Abraham prayed to God to intercede for Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 18:20-33), Moses asks for God’s intercession (Ex 32:31-32), Esther asks for prayers of intercession (Esther 4:15-16), and so many others prayed for God’s intercession.
How does this apply to your kids?
There are many benefits to teaching children the power of intercessory prayer!
Kids will learn the importance of praying for others.
It will help them grow in charity.
It will help them grow in faith.
While I was at Our Lady’s Ranch in Grass Valley, California, a family came to stay with their five kids. Before dinner, each one was asked who they would like to pray for and what they would like for that person. They chose a sibling, their mom, their dad, or someone else. They prayed for their health, they prayed they may find more clients for work, they prayed for the happiness of the other person. Then they prayed the Hail Mary Prayer. This short little prayer time helped the kids turn their thoughts from themselves towards others, towards their family, and towards God.
Practical ways to practice intercessory prayer with your children
Ask your children to pray for one family member every night.
Have your children write or draw a prayer intention to bring to Mass.
On popsicle sticks, write down a variety of intercessory prayers such as the pope’s monthly intentions or praying for the unborn. During prayer time, have your children pick a stick and then ask for prayers for that intention.
